The European Waveski Titles took place in Ericiera in Portugal at the end of April. The number of competitors was down on previous years but the talent on display was definitely up! Around 40 competitors from Europe battled it out at Ribera de las for titles in the Open, Junior, Ladies, New Age, Senior and Masters divisions.
As usual, Portugal did not let us down. Two days before the comp the swell was 3.7 metres from the N West at 12 seconds. Time for free surf at a slightly sheltered spot South of Ericiera. The swell dropped to around the 2 metre mark for the comp at Ribera. The French entries dominated the field but there was also a strong presence from Ireland and the UK who had 9 riders in total. The competition was a really relaxed event with a holiday atmosphere. The organisers had a sports massage tent set up for competitors, lunches arranged and a wacky band who played on the beach and car park. The local crew have to be acknowledged for their respect and support of the event throughout the four days of competition.
So a big thank you to all the folk that organised the event, in particular Cisco Sariavo, Mafra municipality, the Ribera de Las surf club, the lodge and the cafe at Ribera for food and refreshments! And a big thank you to Mitchell Blades, Gath, Duem Stuff, Polar for continued support.
